The Working-Process of “The Group”

We downloaded the program “Voice Changer 0.9 Diamond” and copied the Instructions and the terms of use into Google-docs files.

In the Google-docs the Instructions got visually transformed, since they were much bigger and they had allot of empty space in random places.

The big font with all the space around it, made the content seem more meaningful, and that, also changed the meaning.

Something that is said does not exist without the medium through which it got said. The materiality of the medium has an essential influence on what is mediated.

In addition to the pseudo-importance and its meaning that got projected on the text, there was also a meaning created by the space that was not only around but also in a sentence.

The next thing we did was to read the text out loud. The interruptions through space between the words in the google-docs file, interrupted also our way of reading and it drew the attention to our self. It made us conscious of our self reading the text and the reading became performative.

At the same time the content of the text is about the sound of our voice. The visual way of how the text was written and the content fitted together and made the link that when the text says things like: “the most powerful real time voice morphing”, it could refer to our voice that we raise in the moment when we read the text out loud. In that way the sentence “installed on your system” would refer “your system” as being the body of the reader.

The google-docs file changed the context of the text so that the terms of use became the product by itself.

We recreated the look that the text got after pasting it into the google-docs file, in the HTML and CSS files.

In the google-docs was no indication of units behind the 18 that was stating the fontsize. What we did was to use the cm scale on top of the docs-file to roughly find the right size for our HTML and CSS files.

Since CSS and HTML are insensitive to whitespace, the recreation of the outcome in the google-docs file was by placing extra white space on the right places.

After looking at what we now had in front of us we wanted to take the new context, in which we had placed the text, further. This we did by giving our book a cover and a text, that we wrote, that instructs the reader how he is supposed to read the text. In order that the instructions are applicable, we changed the color of some sentences.

The instructions are:

“You have to be three people in order to read this book and together you have to read out loud. One of you is the main reader, one is backreader number 1 and one is backreader number 2. The black text has to be read only by the mainreader. The red text has to be read by both; mainreader and backreader number 1. The purple text has to be read by; mainreader, backreader number 1 and backreader number 2 together.

Example:

This text has now to be read by one person ( mainreader).

This text has to be read by two persons ( mainreader and backreader number 1)

This text has to be read by three persons ( mainreader, backreader number 1 and backreader number 2).
